Current and Upcoming Activities

Starting in Fall 2020, I will be the Associate Director for WAC at UC Davis.

Since ending my term on the WAC team in 2015 (see below), I have continued to work with faculty across campus (e.g. via ongoing conversations about writing pedagogy with faculty in Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemistry, Human Development, and Religious Studies, among others).

I have also been collaborating with Watumesa Tan, a professor of Biotechnology at Atma Jaya University in Jakarta, Indonesia, on her hybrid-online undergraduate science writing course.

I was recently (2019) elected to a three-year term as a Council Member at Large for the Pacific Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

My in-process monograph is about rhetorical approaches to teaching writing in scientific disciplines.

WAC team member (2009-2015)

From 2009 to 2015, I was a member of a five person Writing Across the Curriculum team at UC Davis.

While some members of the team focused on direct instruction to undergraduate and graduate students, I was one of two who focused on faculty development by:

  • Meeting one-on-one with faculty across the campus to support their writing pedagogy
  • Organizing and conducting writing pedagogy workshops for faculty and TAs across campus
  • Surveying faculty on their needs and developing faculty resources

The extent of work with an individual faculty member depended on their need. It ranged from one-time consultations, to long-term partnerships in which the faculty member and I developed discipline- and class-appropriate assignments and teaching materials.

When needed, I also organized and conducted writing workshops and retreats for students, and mentored graduate writing fellows.
